Janna Sweenie

handjiveJanna M. Sweenie’s first book is Hand Jive: American Sign Language for Real Life to be published by Barnes & Noble in 2006. Born Deaf in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Janna graduated from the Iowa School for the Deaf and later became one of the first Deaf graduates of The City University of New York’s Lehman College. Her Masters degree in Deafness Rehabilitation is from New York University. For over 15 years she has taught American Sign Language levels 1-4 at NYU. Other teaching credits include Montclair State University, LaGuardia Community College and Catholic Charities of Brooklyn. Janna appeared on Broadway as an interpreter for 42nd Street and Flower Drum Song and for the past five years she has served as an advisor for the Juilliard/Theatre Development Fund’s Interpreting for the Theatre training program.
